The purpose of this Transparency website is to provide citizens with convenient access to details about state government financial matters, including details on how tax dollars are spent. With a few simple clicks, anyone can now view the spending of more than 90 state government units and many units of local government. We hope you find this website useful. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Fiscal transparency is essential to sound government. When spending is done in the open, public officials are usually more accountable, because they know their actions will be subject to public scrutiny. Besides, citizens have a right to know where their hard-earned tax dollars are going.
In March 2008, SC Comptroller Richard Eckstrom unveiled the state's first Spending Transparency Website. The goal is to shine a light on spending, thus improving the quality of government and giving taxpayers click-of-a-mouse access to details about how their money is spent. Select one of the links below and follow the prompts to obtain spending information for individual state agencies and other government entities. If you have a question about a state agency's expenditures listed on this website, you can obtain the agency's phone number(s) from a state government phone directory available at this link.
In clicking the link Monthly Detailed Spending on the State Government Spending Transparency page, a screen will open to allow you to choose an individual state agency. The spending details you see are of the agency’s monthly disbursements, including any payments made on its monthly charge card statements. For those charge card payments, the name of the payee (the party the check is written to) will be the issuer of the card (Bank of America) rather than the individual merchants who accepted the credit card whenever the agency bought from them during the month. The various merchants or vendors the agency bought from can be viewed by clicking on the link below called “Monthly Charge Card Usage” and then selecting the agency.
